Prior to cremation, you may choose to hold a traditional funeral service at our Columbus facility, a church, or other venue of your choosing. This service can include a visitation, giving guests time to pay their respects. At Graumlich, we only hold one funeral at a time, so your family can use our facility without interruption from other services. Funeral services can be personalized with family photos, videos, and other displays that commemorate your loved one. After the visitation and funeral, cremation will take place and you will receive the cremated remains (cremains).
Following cremation, a memorial service may be held in our chapel or some other facility that you choose. It can be personalized to include stories, scripture, music, or other meaningful tributes that celebrate your loved one. After the service, you may take the cremains home, scatter them, bury them, or place them in a niche.
How to care for Your Loved One's Cremains
When you receive your loved one’s cremains following cremation, you have several options for what to do with them. You can keep them in your home, bury them or place them in a columbarium, or scatter the ashes in a meaningful place. The best choice depends on the wishes of your loved one and your family.
Following cremation, you will receive the cremains and can choose a special container for them to store in the home so you always have a visible reminder of your loved one. A mantel or shelf can be a great spot for the container, and you may also choose to create a display by adding pictures, flowers, and other meaningful items. If you’d like a small memento, you can work with a company that uses some of the cremains to create a keepsake for you, such as jewelry, blown glass or pottery.
Inurnment is the process of placing an urn filled with cremains in its final resting place after cremation has occurred. One option is to bury it in a garden or cemetery, similar to a casket burial. Another option is to place it in a columbarium, which contains small niches where the cremains are stored. Both options give you a physical location to visit. Depending on what you choose, you may need a specific type of container. The staff at Graumlich can explain the different options and necessary steps.
Scattering the cremains is another option following cremation. You may choose to scatter them on your property or at a spot that was meaningful to your loved one. If you’d like, you can even hold a ceremony before scattering the cremains, which could include a eulogy, a reading or prayer, music, sharing memories, and other commemorative activities. Be sure to check local and Ohio laws before scattering cremains to ensure you’re at a place where scattering cremains is allowed.
