Emmit Burchett

Emmit Burchett, aged 90, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his home on March 23, 2026, after a brief illness, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Louisa, Kentucky on December 23, 1935, to the late Orville and Sadie Adkins Burchett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruth; his siblings Paul Ray Burchett, Shirley DeBord, William Burchett, Clyde Burchett, Walter Burchett, and Nellie Levering; stepson Jimmy Hawthorne; and step-grandson Joseph Hawthorne.

Emmit is survived by his sisters Wanda (Jerry) Welch, Nannie (Earl) Stewart, and brother Ronnie Burchett; daughter Emma Moore (Rick); stepdaughter Joanie Behrens (Greg); stepsons Rocky Hawthorne (Debra) and Tim Hawthorne (Cindy); Step-daughter-in-law Sharon Hawthorne; grandchildren Justin Hamilton, Chloe Haines (James), and Emilie Hamilton (Josh); step-grandchildren Alicia and Micala Behrens, Kevin (Kim) Hawthorne, Amy Hawthorne, Ryan (Ashley) Hawthorne, Nicholas Hawthorne, Jeffrey (Fabiola Peñalba) Hawthorne, and Katelyn (Tyler) Hawthorne. Great-grandchildren Brandon Hamilton, Larry Haines, Olivia Hamilton, Kyle Hawthorne, Samantha and Jake Hall, Jordyn Hawthorne, Elliana, Everly, Theodore, Genevieve, and Bennett Hawthorne; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Emmit retired from ABB in 1998, where he met his wife, Ruth. Together they shared many happy years built on love, laughter, and devotion to their family. Though he valued his career, his true joy in life was always his family. He was known by those who loved him as one of the most dependable people you could ever know.

To his grandchildren, he was more than a grandfather—he was a steady presence and a true father figure. They often joked that whenever something went missing, Grandpa would quietly and relentlessly search the house until he found it. Somehow, he almost always did.

Emmit had a quiet determination about him and a stubborn streak that those closest to him understood well. He took pride in fixing things himself and had a remarkable ability to figure out how to make something work, often in ways only he could. Whether repairing something around the house or finding a creative solution to a problem, he approached life with patience, persistence, and a bit of ingenuity.

He also loved to share a laugh, especially during good-natured debates and teasing conversations with his family. Those moments of humor and conversation are memories his family will treasure forever.

Above all else, Emmit was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose kindness, patience, and generosity shaped the lives of those around him. His steady love, gentle presence, and unwavering support will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
