Clayton Hare

March 13, 1938 — July 30, 2013

Clayton (Gene) Eugene Hare, 75, of Gahanna passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2013 in his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Portsmouth, OH on March 13, 1938 to the late Archie Clayton & Evelyn Louise Hare, the family moved to Columbus, OH in 1950. As a teammate of the Columbus East High School Cross Country Team, he won back-to-back state championships in 1956 and 1957. After graduating high school in 1957 he served in the Army 1958 to 1961 with the 4th Engineers stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington as a demolition and nuclear specialist. After attending The Ohio State University and Columbus Technical Institute, he worked as a design and mechanical engineer for several companies including Varo Engineers, Dennison Engineering, Jeffrey Manufacturing, Battelle Institute, Rockwell Aviation, East Ohio Machinery and General Electric in Circleville, OH and Winchester, VA as well as freelance. Gene and his wife (Betty) attended Stonybrook United Methodist Church in Gahanna. Gene's hobbies include photography and woodworking. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty (BJ) of Gahanna; son, Anson (Michelle) Hare of Fredericktown, OH; son, Jay Hare of Columbus, OH; stepson, Scott (Jennifer) Jenkins of Crawford, GA; brother, James (Pat) Hare of Pickerington, OH; 4 grandchildren, Rhiannon, Clayton, Cheyenne Hare and Janis Ann Jenkins; nephews, Matthew (Julie) Hare, of Vinton, VA and Jonathan (Amanda) Hare of Blacklick, OH. Visitation Thursday, August 1 from 4-8 PM, at GRAUMLICH FUNERAL HOME, 1351 S. High St., where service will be held Friday at 11 AM, with visitation at 10 AM. Pastor Mike Bowie officiating. Burial with military honors to follow at MifflinTownship Cemetery in Gahanna. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Mount Carmel Hospice.
